my creative space - poppy's quilt

I had fun sewing this flower garden quilt for baby Poppy who arrived a month early on Christmas Day. The fresh spring colour scheme was inspiring and I loved watching the random squares I picked out of the stash come together. I think the fabrics are perfect for a nursery - clean and soft but bright and graphic too. I also happen to know that Poppy is a fan of green, or maybe that's her mum!

It was really wonderful for me to experiment with using my Flower Garden series of fabrics. I love the way they coordinate with all my other favourites. I was amazed to find I'd somehow they matched perfectly the colours from an old favourite Erin McMorris print and a fabulous green and blue check I bought recently.

For the backing I used a lovely pale green flannel with a small white dot that I'd bought for another baby blanket. I love using flannel for backing and I decided to self bind the quilt with this fabric too. It was a nice surprise how quick this was to do and I'll definitely do it again, especially on a small project like this, where the backing coordinates so well.

Its a really simple quilt, but I'll put together a little post about the size of the squares and where I found the tutorials for self binding and one on joining small pieces of batting for those who are interested.

I loved having lots of different patterns to sew with, and it struck me that it would be nice to celebrate my Poppy quilt by making up a few Quilt Packs with small pieces of my Flower Press fabrics for anyone who wants to do the same. I'm making up four packs of four pieces to start with, each cut from a quarter of a FQ, a taster pack for Flower Press fabrics! I'll be popping them in the shop this morning. If you want to sample these fabrics in person, this could be the perfect way. Find them in the shop.

And don't forget to check out all those other inspiring and creative types here.

  2. This is gorgeous. Loving all the bright fun fabric choices and the green backing is perfect for it. I made a quilt for my daughter last year and the lady in my fabric shop convinced me to use a pink backing and I'm forever regretting not going green! Beautiful.

  3. This Quilt is stunning! I love the colour choices. What size squares did you cut? And how big is the quilt all together? I've never braved quilting, but I want to try making one for the baby before it arrives (Just 15 weeks to go now!).
