my creative space - treasure bags
I had so much fun making these little drawstring bags, I started with one and couldn't stop. It was wonderful to be sewing with my toy box prints, the marbles and triangles and the purple polka dot and seeing how they mix and match with each other and also with other fabrics. I like the way they play together, I like the colours and the scale. Patchwork is such a fun way to combine prints, and after a while some of the techniques I learnt making my quilt came back to me. I'm nearly ready to tackle another!
I've been meaning for ages to make a drawstring bag, and of course meaning to make a marble bag from my marble fabric since I designed it, I had to! The other day I found this great tutorial for a patchwork version and knew I had to give it a try.
The tutorial has two drawstrings but I've used just one. My only other modifications, which I made on the three plain bags, were a slightly smaller size (7 3/4" square) and also I made the drawstring panel at the top slightly wider so you see more of the contrasting fabric (2 inches wide rather than the specified 1 1/2").
I made the patchwork bag first, and it took a little while to cut the pieces and put them together. The other three were so quick - I cut and sewed them as a batch. All four bags are reversible, that's the patchwork in the last photo, its lined with my triangle twist fabric. The other three I lined with calico to make them more hard wearing, which is lucky because they've all been claimed by my kids and taken off to be filled with treasure. I think these would be perfect for collectible cards, game pieces, money, lollies, or even marbles but you could fill them with anything. They'd make a nice Christmas gift I think, filled with treasure. I'm definitely going to be making more.

They're gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteI love drawstring bags - they're so quick and easy and, above all, versatile!
ReplyDeleteI love the way your designs all work together beautifully inthe patchy one. Just gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteThe fabric just suits them perfectly. Particularly love the marble one! When I was a kid I had a bag of marbles in a little drawstring bag that my grandmother had made for my dad's marbles. My grandmother had passed away before I was born and the bag was the only thing I ever had of hers. Sad to say I don't know what happened to the bag, but my son owns the same (3rd generation) marbles now.
